There was a bit of a break when this picture was taken during a Shred & Med Disposal Day event which was held Saturday morning, July 20, at the Union County Courthouse in Jonesboro.

Shred, Med event collects 77 pounds of unused medications, 3,035 pounds of shredded documents

Those who drove by the Union County Courthouse in Jonesboro on Saturday morning, July 20, may have noticed something a little out of the ordinary.

On hand at the courthouse were a large truck with “Shred-It” on the side, Anna-Jonesboro Community High School football players carrying boxes and vehicles scurrying in and out.

All of this was part of a Shred & Med Disposal Day presented by Southern Seven Health Department, the Union County Farm Bureau and the Union County Sheriff’s Office.

The free event offered residents confidential document shredding and safe disposal of unwanted medications.

Residents from as far as Hardin, Massac and Williamson counties participated in the event.

Southern Seven Health Department education director Natalie Sawyer reported that 77 pounds of unused medications were collected, along with 3,035 pounds of shredded documents.

The health department recommends never sharing medications with others.

The health department says that anyone who requires medication should always consult their physician prior to use.

Each resident/household was limited to five banker-sized boxes or one 18 gallon sized tote of documents to be shredded.

Local businesses donated items for the event, including Burger King and WIBH Radio.

Success Noted at County Board Meeting

The success of the July 20 event at the courthouse also was noted at last week’s regular meeting of the Union County Board of Commissioners.

The meeting was Friday morning, July 26, at the courthouse.

Union County Board of Commissioners vice chairman Bobby Toler Jr. was on hand for the Shred & Med Disposal Day.

Toler said that 90 people brought items to the event for proper disposal.

He said that five employees from Southern Seven Health Department worked at the event.

The Union County Farm Bureau provided snacks and refreshments.

Members of the Anna-Jonesboro Community High School football team were on hand to volunteer their services.

The players, who were led by A-J head football coach Brett Detering, helped those who came to the event to unload their vehicles on a hot and humid summer day.

“It was a hot day, but it was a good day,” Toler said.

County board of commissioners chairman Max Miller said it is hoped that Shred & Med Disposal Day events can be done on a regular basis in the future in the county.
