Senior food program receives funds

The Union County Board of Commissioners acted last week to support a food program which benefits local senior citizens.

The action came at a regular meeting of the county board which was held Friday morning, June 24. The meeting was at the Union County Courthouse in Jonesboro.

The county commissioners approved an allocation of $5,000 for a food program operated by the Shawnee Development Council's, SDC, office in Anna. A request for the funds was made by Paula Stairs of the local SDC office.

The county has approved similar allocation of funds in the past.

The funds that were allocated by the commissioners are generated by a local tax which is levied to support services for senior citizens in Union County.

Stairs said that the funds will provide a major boost for a program which provides food to Union County senior citizens. She said the program is hoping to be able to serve 200 seniors a month.

Stairs noted that the food which is provided to seniors is acquired locally.

The SDC food pantry welcomes donations of produce. For more information about making a donation, contact the SDC office at 833-7431.
