National Prescription Drug Take Back Day scheduled

A National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is planned Oct. 27.

Organizers of the event note that National Prescription Drug Take Back Day addresses a crucial public safety and public health issue.

According to the 2016 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 6.2 million Americans misused controlled prescription drugs.

The study showed that a majority of abused prescription drugs were obtained from family and friends, often from the home medicine cabinet.

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration’s, DEA, National Drug Prescription Take Back Day events provide an opportunity for Americans to prevent drug addiction and overdose deaths.

Too often, unused prescription drugs find their way into the wrong hands. That can be dangerous and often tragic.

Those who are working to promote the National Prescription Drug Take Back Day note that it’s  time to clean out your medicine cabinets and turn in, safely and anonymously, your unwanted and expired medications.

Teresa Goddard, a preventionist from The Fellowship House, is getting the Youth Advisory Committee, YAC, at Anna Junior High School in Anna onboard to pass out flyers to help educate and promote Drug Take Back events.

The next National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is set for Oct. 27, with another to follow in April 2019.

The Take Back Days are an initiative aimed at providing safe, convenient and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs.

Cobden Police Department

The Cobden Police Department will be participating in the National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, Oct. 27, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

The Anna Junior High School YAC members will help to spread the word about permanent Drug Take Back locations by posting flyers in the area to educate the community where they can safely dispose of unused or unwanted medications at any time throughout the year.

The flyers include the following four locations  in the area to drop off expired or unwanted medications:
