Mississippi, Big Muddy rivers flooding in region

Flood warnings continue until further notice along the Mississippi and Big Muddy rivers in Southern Illinois. Union County is bordered by both rivers.

The National Weather Service office in Paducah reported early this week on its website that minor to moderate flooding continued along the Mississippi and Big Muddy rivers.

The Mississippi River is forecast to crest late this week at Cape Girardeau and Thebes.

Updates on river flooding in the area follow:

Mississippi River at Cape Girardeau

At 7:30 p.m. Monday, the river’s stage was 36.9 feet. Flood stage is 32.0 feet.

Minor flooding was occurring. Moderate flooding is forecast.

The river will continue rising to near 38.5 feet by Sunday morning and then begin falling.

Mississippi River at Thebes

At 7:30 p.m. Monday, the river’s stage was 35.8 feet. Flood stage is 33.0 feet.

Minor flooding was occurring. Moderate flooding is forecast.

The river is forecast to continue rising to near 37.0 feet by Sunday evening and then begin falling.

Big Muddy River near Murphysboro

At 7:30 p.m. Monday, the river’s stage was 28.0 feet. Flood stage is 22.0 feet.

Minor flooding was occurring. Moderate flooding is forecast.

The river was expected to continue rising to near 28.5 feet by Tuesday evening and then begin falling.
