Lottery determines primary ballot order for candidates

The Illinois State Board of Elections, ISBE, reported that ballot order has been determined for presidential candidates who filed nominating petitions for the upcoming March primary election.

lSBE conducted a lottery on Jan. 13 to determine the ballot order for presidential candidates who filed nominating petitions at 8 a.m. on Jan. 2.

The state board reported on its website that the following Democratic Party candidates were eligible for the lottery and will be listed on the ballot in the following order:

Amy Klobuchar, Deval Patrick, Bernie Sanders, Joseph R. Biden, Michael Bloomberg, Elizabeth Warren, Pete Buttigieg, Tom Steyer, Andrew Yang.

Republicans Donald J. Trump and John Schiess both were eligible for the lottery, ISBE reported.

Schiess was the winner in the lottery. The state board noted that Schiess filed only 10 nominating signatures of the required 3,000.

Because of that, his candidacy faced a review of compliance with apparent conformity when ISBE issued its amended ballot certification on Friday, Jan. 17.
