King Community Celebration planned Jan. 20 in Carbondale

The 20th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Celebration is set for 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20, at the Carbondale Civic Center.

Doors are scheduled to open at 3 p.m. for light refreshments and viewing of community organizations’ information tables.  

The theme for this year’s celebration is “A Voice for Freedom and Justice.”  

This year’s celebration includes participation by Murphysboro, Carbondale and Marion.

The Carbondale Middle School jazz band is scheduled to perform under the direction of music teacher Shadi Frick.  

A choir from the Boys and Girls Club of Carbondale, under the direction of Ann Marie Schmidt, is scheduled to perform. 

Delores Isaac from Marion is scheduled to be the featured soloist for “If I Can Help Somebody.”  

The Spirit of Dr. King Community Service Award will be presented.

Those who plan to attend the celebration are encouraged to bring canned or boxed food donations for local food pantries.
