Independence Day events planned in region

Celebrations are being planned throughout the area in observance of the Independence Day holiday.

Independence Day is Thursday, July 4.

Here’s a look at some of the events which are being planned:

Tamms

An Independence Day celebration is planned Thursday, July 4, at the community park in Tamms. The celebration is sponsored by the Tamms Volunteer Fire Department.

Food and music are planned all day. A dunking booth, kids’ games, a bounce house and door prizes also are planned.

A car, truck and motorcycle show is scheduled. Registration is planned from 10 a.m. to noon. The entry fee is $25. Judging begins at 3 p.m. Awards will be presented at 5 p.m.

Gospel music will be presented by Cassie Sharp from 10 a.m. to noon.

The Hollerboys are scheduled to perform from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Fireworks are planned at 10 p.m.

Anna

An Independence Day fireworks display is planned Thursday night, July 4. 

Fireworks will be presented by Brad Dawson at the Anna City Park, beginning at dusk.

The event is sponsored by the Anna Fire Department, the Anna Police Department, the City of Anna and local businesses.

The rain date for the display is Friday, July 5.

Goreville

Goreville plans to host a Freedom Fest on Thursday, July 4.

A car show is planned at the United Methodist Church. Registration begins at 8 a.m.

At 9 a.m., The Redeemsmen Quartet will perform on stage on Broadway.

A parade is planned in Goreville at 10 a.m.

The Methodist men plan to serve barbeque sandwiches, with chips and a drink, starting at 11 a.m.

A Kids’ Fun Zone is planned from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the village park. A cornhole tournament is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.

Free concerts are scheduled to begin in the village park at 5 p.m. with Dakota Danielle, followed by Caleb Atwood at 6 p.m. and the Southern Comfort Band at 7 p.m.

Fireworks are planned at around dusk at the village park.

Vienna

Vienna plans to have an Independence Day celebration on Friday, July 5. The celebration will be at the Vienna Ball Park.

Activities are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. Fireworks are planned at dusk.

Those who plan to attend are advised to bring lawn chairs.

Prior to the fireworks, Heath Holloman will provide musical entertainment.

Stevens Aircraft Solutions is scheduled to offer helicopter rides beginning at 4 p.m.

Just Chill will be serving ice cream and shaved ice.

Lake of Egypt

Marion Elks Lodge No. 800 plans to host a fireworks display on Saturday, July 6, on the Lake of Egypt.

Fireworks will be shot off at the Marion Elks property, which is located near the power plant, east of the dam.

Barbeque chicken will be for sale.

Cape Girardeau

Independence Day events are planned Thursday, July 4, at Arena Park in Cape Girardeau. 

Patriotic music will be presented by the Cape Girardeau Municipal Band at 8:30 p.m.

A Southeast Missourian Spirit of America Award presentation is set for 9:15 p.m.

A fireworks display is planned at the park.

The program will be broadcast live on 960 KZIM and 1400 KSIM.

A living history program is planned from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday, July 4, at the Fort D Historic Site in Cape Girardeau.

The site is located at 920 Fort St., off Sprigg Street and four blocks south of Missouri Route 74.

Carbondale

The City of Carbondale is partnering with Southern Illinois University to present a fireworks display on Thursday, July 4.

The display is set for 9:15 p.m. on the SIU campus. Parking will be available at the Banterra Center (SIU Arena) lots.

In the event of rain, the fireworks will be presented Friday night, July 5.

Murphysboro

A fireworks display is planned on Thursday night, July 4, at Riverside Park in Murphysboro. The fireworks begin at dusk.

Golconda

The City of Golconda plans to have its annual fireworks celebration on the riverfront in downtown Golconda on Friday, July 5. 

For the second year in a row, Mason “Little Hank” Ramsey is scheduled to perform a free concert on stage on the Pope County Courthouse lawn at 6:30 p.m.  

Activities on the courthouse lawn are scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. on July 5 with games for the kids.  Horse and buggy rides and helicopter rides will also be available throughout the evening.  

There will be food and drinks and other specialities as well.  A boat parade on the Ohio River is also scheduled prior to the fireworks presentation at 8:30 p.m.
