Girl Scouts planning clean-up event

Local Girl Scouts are planning to have a county-wide litter clean up event from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 23.

The event, called “That’s Trash,” will be conducted by Girl Scout Troop 8597.

The troop is working to earn its Silver Award. The award is the second highest honor that a Girl Scout can earn.

The troop is asking that everyone who is interested in helping pick up litter throughout the community to meet at the Union County Courthouse in Jonesboro at 8 a.m. on March 23.

An opening ceremony and a moment of silence are planned to remember four Girl Scouts who were killed in Wisconsin while picking up litter last year.

The troop will provide gloves, vests and trash bags,  and will also show areas throughout Union County where volunteers can focus on litter clean up.

Lunch and water also will be provided for all volunteers.

All of the litter which will be collected can either be dropped off at Anna City Hall or at the Union County Courthouse in litter dumpsters which will be provided for the March 23 event only.

All recyclables which are collected can be dropped off at the Choate Mental Health and Developmental Center in Anna’s recycling center or at the county courthouse in recycling bins which will be provided for the March 23 event only.

More information about the clean up event is available by contacting Melissa Waun at 618-525-5111 or David Waun at 618-614-0451.
