County engineer receives recognition at board meeting

The Illinois Association of County Engineers, IACE, has honored Union County Highway Department engineer Kevin Grammer.

Grammer has been named as the IACE Zone 3 county engineer of the year.

The Union County Board of Commissioners on Friday recognized Grammer. He was honored at a regular meeting of the Union County Board of Commissioners which was held last Friday morning. The meeting was at the Union County Courthouse in Jonesboro.

Grammer was presented with a plaque in recognition of accomplishments at a Feb. 27 Illinois Transportation and Highway Engineering conference. The conference was held at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign.

The plaque was presented to Grammer by IACE president Michael Pedigo.

Grammer earned a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from Southern Illinois University  Carbondale. He is a licensed professional engineer in Illinois.

Grammer was appointed as Union County Highway Department engineer in December 2008.

His prior experience included 22 years with the Illinois Department of Transportation’s, IDOT, District 9 office in Carbondale.

While with IDOT, Grammer held the positions of bridge and hydraulics engineer, traffic operations engineer and operations engineer.

Grammer currently serves as vice chairman of the constitution/bylaws and emergency preparedness committee and as a member of the executive director and audit committee for the Illinois Association of County Engineers.

His experience has allowed him the opportunity to work with several counties, other than just Union County, to bring their aging levee systems into compliance with increasing U.S. Army Corps of Engineers regulations.

Zone 3 consists of the southern 27 counties of Illinois.

Grammer was nominated for the honor by the other county engineers in Zone 3.  The nomination was based on the past year’s performance, as well as career accomplishments.

Union County Board of Commissioners chairman Max Miller praised Grammer for the honor that he received and for the hard work that he continues to do for the county.
