Civilian Conservation Corps presentation set in Cobden

The First Presbyterian Church of Cobden plans to present a program about a New Deal work program that had a profound impact on Southern Illinois.

Local historian and author Kay Rippelmeyer-Tippy plans to speak Monday, Oct. 22, at 7 p.m. at the church about the four Civilian Conservation Corps camps which were located in Union County during the Great Depression.

Times were tough in Southern Illinois during the 1930s, when the Great Depression caused hard-working people to lose their jobs, their savings and in some cases, their homes and farms.

The federal government responded with New Deal work programs, such as the Civilian Conservation Corps, CCC.

Rippelmeyer-Tippy’s research about CCC camps in Southern Illinois began in 1987 when she was employed at Southern Illinois University Carbondale as an academic advisor.

Her findings led her to write two books, “Giant City State Park and the Civilian Conservation Corps,” which was published in 2010, and  “Civilian Conservation Corps in Southern Illinois,” which was published in 2015.

Admission is free and refreshments will be served.  Donations will be accepted for the Jackson-Union County Habitat for Humanity. The church is located at 103 N. Jefferson St. in Cobden.

For more information about the program, call the church office at 893-4424.
