Area rivers flooding

Flood warnings have been issued by the National Weather Service office in Paducah for the Mississippi and Big Muddy rivers. Union County is bordered by both of the rivers.

The weather service reported on its website that recent heavy rainfall over the mid-Mississippi River and Big Muddy River basins has caused river levels to rise.

Flood warnings are in effect this week for the Mississippi River at Cape Girardeau and Thebes and for the Big Muddy River near Murphysboro.

The following information about flood conditions in the region was posted Monday night, Jan. 13, on the weather service’s website:

Mississippi River at Cape Girardeau

A flood warning continues until Monday, Jan. 20.

At 8 p.m. Monday, the river’s stage was 36.6 feet. Flood stage is 32.0 feet.

Minor flooding was occurring. Moderate flooding was in the forecast.

The river was expected to continue rising to near 38.5 feet by Wednesday evening, Jan. 15. The river is expected to fall below flood stage before midnight on Sunday.

Mississippi River at Thebes

A flood warning continues until Sunday evening.

At 8 p.m. Monday, the river’s stage was 35.4 feet. Flood stage is 33.0 feet.

Minor flooding was occurring. Moderate flooding was in the forecast.

The river is expected to continue rising to near 37.5 feet by Thursday morning, today. The river is expected to fall below flood stage early Sunday afternoon.

Big Muddy River near Murphysboro

A flood warning continues until Monday, Jan. 20.

At 7:30 p.m. Monday, the river’s stage was 26.5 feet. Flood stage is 22.0 feet.

Minor flooding was occurring. Moderate flooding was in the forecast.

The river was expected to continue rising to near 28.8 feet by Wednesday evening. The river is expected to fall below flood stage Monday morning.
