Annual Pulaski Pecan Bonanza planned at county fairgrounds

The sixth annual Pulaski Pecan Bonanza is scheduled to take place Saturday, Oct. 20.

The event will be at the Pulaski County Fairgrounds. Hours are from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Entry and parking will be free. Each person who attends will be able to enter a $25 gas gift certificate giveaway to Terry’s Fuel and Service.

Organizers say that the Bonanza is “all about pecans.” The day will be full of everything pecan: games, contests, bingo, food, cookbooks and more.

The day is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. with a special recipe pecan pancake breakfast with Ma Rogan’s homemade pecan syrup and a choice of sides.

Once again, Rex Wilburn will have pork and chicken barbeque. Advanced orders for barbequed pork butts are available for $30.

Pulled pork and chicken dinners will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

A pecan bakeoff is planned. Those who want to participate must register their pecan dish by 10:30 a.m. There is no entry fee.

Winners will be chosen by most votes. Samples will be offered to Bonanza go-ers, with tickets cast for favorites in one of four categories.

Prizes and gift certificates to the Old General Store will be awarded for first, second and third place entries.

Entries are being accepted for the Pecan Beauty Pageant. The pageant is set for 11 a.m.

Girls through the age of 15 are invited to participate. Girls will dress in country attire and will vie for Pecan Princess in one of five age groups.

The Pecan Parade is scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m. in downtown Pulaski. The parade will include a float contest. Prizes will be awarded for most original and best overall.

The fairgrounds will feature various vendors with their own pecan specialties.

Vendor spaces are limited and require an application and $25 vendor fee. Sale of homegrown vegetables and plants are encouraged with a $5 vendor fee.

School, church and civic organizations are invited to attend and to host bake sales, with pecans in mind. Special prizes will be awarded for edible specialties that support the pecan theme.

Pecan bingo will feature cracked pecan shells for markers. Games will be played from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Pecan cookbooks are available for $5 and will also be sold at the Pecan Bonanza. Ad books will also be available at no charge featuring local businesses and organizations.

Pecan Bonanza souvenir t-shirts will be on sale for $10. Community Health’s WOW van will be on site offering flu shots and blood pressure checks.

Entertainment under a pavilion is planned from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. A variety of local talent will be featured, including the Rev. Alice Rogan, the Gospel Crusaders and other groups to be scheduled. Singers or family oriented bands are invited to perform.

Pecan Bonanza also hosts a pit stop for the Tour de Shawnee tourism event. The Pecan Bonanza will supply snacks and a rest stop for the 65- and 100-mile legs of this annual event, which is sponsored by Alexander County Tourism to help promote the area.

The Pecan KidZone will offer a petting zoo, bounce house, pumpkin decorating, horseshoes, rock painting, face painting and pecan themed games directed by Meridian’s FFA. All-day passes will be available for $5 each.

To finish the evening, a 50/50 drawing is planned.
