Alliance of churches plans prayer walks at schools

The Union County Alliance of Churches is planning to sponsor prayer walks at eight Union County schools next week.

Host churches are scheduled to lead the prayer walks and members of the community are invited to participate.

Praying Christians who are unable to physically attend a prayer walk at one of these area schools are also invited to offer prayers for teachers, students, administration and staff at the scheduled times.

The first prayer walk is planned Sunday, Aug. 14, at 7 p.m. at Anna Junior High/Davie School and will be hosted by members of the First Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Anna.

Prayers will be offered for the safety of teachers and students at the Dongola School on Monday morning, Aug. 15, at 9 a.m. The prayer walk will be hosted by the Dongola Lutheran Parish.

On Tuesday, Aug. 16, at 10 a.m., prayer walks are planned at three different locations.

The First Christian Church of Anna plans to host the walk around the campus of the Anna-Jonesboro Community High School and offer prayers for the educational staff and the student body.

Also at 10 a.m., the Jonesboro First Baptist Church plans to host a prayer walk at the Jonesboro Elementary School.

At 10 a.m. on Tuesday at the Lincoln Elementary School in Anna, members of the First Baptist and  Trinity Lutheran churches in Anna plan to join together to offer prayers for the safety of teachers and students.

Organizers said on Monday that dates and times were still pending for the prayer walk at the Cobden Schools to be hosted by the Cobden First Baptist Church, the prayer walk at the Lick Creek School to be hosted by the United Missionary Baptist Church and the prayer walk at the Shawnee Schools to be hosted by the Wolf Lake Methodist Church.

In announcing plans for the prayer walks, the Union County Alliance of Churches offered three prayer points:

•Pray that those in authority of the educational system in the country will see that “separation of church and state” does not mean godless education.

•Pray that the goal of the system be not only to understand the students, but to bring them to understanding both on the moral and educational level.

•Pray that discipline and respect be restored in schools.
