Plans for the first laymen’s breakfast were announced in the March 27, 1969, issue of The Gazette-Democrat:

First Laymen’s

Breakfast Set

For March 31

Will Start at 7:00 A.M.

At Legion Community

Center; End at 7:45

The program is now complete for the Laymen’s Breakfast to be held at the American Legion Community Center in Anna Monday, March 31, according to Bob Rich, program chairman.

The program will start promptly at 7:00 a.m. with Jim West, general chairman, welcoming all in attendance. This will be followed by the Invocation by John Crawford. Don Michel will be pianist for group singing and will also accompany the soloist, Bill McEnelly, who will sing “Dear Lord and Father of Mankind.”

The scripture reading from the Old and New Testament will be read by G. Wallace Rich. The Meditation will be given by Dr. Wm. H. Whiting. The breakfast will be terminated no later than 7:45 a.m. with the Benediction by Billy Dillow.

The Rev. Ben Hunter, Laymen adviser and member of the Ministerial Alliance, says a good attendance is expected.

The committee is hopeful that this will become an annual event since an interdenominational meeting such as this is in keeping with the Ecumenical spirit.

Men of all faiths are cordially invited.

A follow-up article about the first breakfast followed in the April 3 issue of the paper:

Crowd of Over 100

Attend Laymen’s

Breakfast Monday

A crow of over 100 enthusiastic men attended the Laymen’s Breakfast held at the American Legion Community Center Monday at 7:00 a.m. A cross section of all of Union County was represented.

This is the first breakfast of its kind held anywhere south of Mattoon and it is hoped to make it an annual affair.

The message was brought by Dr. Wm. H. Whiting. The scripture reading was given by G. Wallace Rich. Bill McEnelly was the featured soloist with Don Michel accompanist. Mr. Michel also played for the group singing. Jim West was master of ceremonies. He asked that there be a minute of silence in respect to Dwight D. Eisenhower whose funeral services were being held in Washington, D.C. Monday.

John Crawford pronounced the invocation and Billy Dillow the benediction. Ned Foley was coordinator for the program.
