Donald L. Smith

<p class="p1">Donald L. Smith, 82, of Alto Pass, died at 2:02 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2016, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.</p><p class="p1">He was born on Nov. 13, 1933, in Murphysboro, the son of Deleane "Speed" Smith and Marie Dixon Smith Blankenship.</p><p class="p1">He was a graduate of the Alto Pass High School. He then went into the U.S. Army and served for 20 years. He retired in 1972 as a Chief Warrant Officer III. He was in the U.S. Army during the Korean and Vietnam conflict.</p><p class="p1">Mr. Smith was Baptist by faith.</p><p class="p1">He was the treasurer of the Alto Pass Cemetery Board. He had served on the Union County Hospital Board and the Shawnee Community College Board. He was a life member of the Kiwanis Club and a life member of VFW Post No. 3455 in Anna. He was a member of the Alto Pass Veterans.</p><p class="p1">He married Irene B. Brasel in 1956. She preceded him in death in May 1966. They had three children to survive, Donald Smith Jr., of Cherokee County, Ga., John Dale Smith of Carbondale and Kaye Lynn Lipe of Murphysboro.</p><p class="p1">He then married Betty June Woodward Holt on Dec. 1, 1968, at Fort Belvoir, Va., and she added five children, Dona Holt Triplett of Efland, N.C., Larry Holt of South Fork, Colo., Kathy Holt of Johnston City, Nancie Escruceria of Hampstead, N.C., and Susan Pagley of Las Vegas, Nev., to the family, and they all survive, plus 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and one sister, Betty Beckman of Murphysboro.</p><p class="p1">He was preceded in death by one brother, the Rev. Claude Smith, and his parents.</p><p class="p1">Funeral services were at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, at Pettett Funeral Home, with Pastor Joshua Newton and Ruth Smith officiating. Burial was at Alto Pass Cemetery with military services.</p><p class="p1">Memorials can be made to the Anna VFW Post No. 3455.</p><p class="p1">Pettett Funeral Home in Murphysboro was in charge of arrangements.</p>
