Jonesboro Elementary School names honor roll students

Jonesboro Elementary School announces second quarter honor roll students:

5th grade, high honors: Hannah DeWitt, Noah McFarland, Sydnie Ralls, Daniel Schmidt, Braden Benns, Mikayla Bundren, Luca Mays, Ethan Palmer.

5th grade, honors: Tonya Cross, Breanna Dillow, Hannah Hileman.

6th grade, high honors: Carsen Clements, Mallory Cochran, Julia Ellis, Emma Goins, Melissa Sarensen, Hunter Smith, Beth Ann Agne, Brooklyn Keene, Jade Marks, Darin Sharp, Tyler Smith, Megan Tehandon, Abby Williams, Ally Williams.

Louis Augustus Joseph Jenkinson

Louis Augustus Joseph Jenkinson, of Cobden, and formerly of Muncie, Ind., died on Jan. 18, 2013, at Heartland Regional Medical Center in Marion.

He was born on Aug. 25, 1914, the son of Joseph and Alma Parcher Jenkinson, in Muncie, Ind. They preceded him in death.

He was married for 76 years to Drexal Creviston Jenkinson. They were married on June 4, 1937. She preceded him in death on Dec. 20, 2012.

Late-winter deer harvest totals 7,749

Deer hunters in Illinois harvested a preliminary total of 7,749 deer during the first segment of the 2012-13 late-winter/CWD deer seasons on Dec. 27-30, 2012.   

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources reported that the harvest total represented an 18.3 percent increase over the same portion of the season in 2011-12, despite nine fewer counties being open to those seasons this year.  

During the 2011-12 late-winter/CWD seasons, hunters harvested 6,550 deer from open counties.

PAST plans to host open house

The PAST organization of Union County is planning to host an open house in February at its new home.

The open house is scheduled from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10, at the PAST House, which is located at 102 S. Main St. in Jonesboro.

The house is just south of the Jonesboro Square on Illinois Route 127.

Exhibits and narratives which are planned at the open house will celebrate the life of Abraham Lincoln, his campaign visit to Union County and history of the era.

SIEC invites students to take part in Youth Tour program

Southern Illinois Electric Cooperative, SIEC, has been participating in the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association’s Youth Tour program for over 40 years.  

Youth Tour is a unique experience in which more than 1,500 students from all across America take part each year.  

Students who are chosen for the program will travel to Washington, D.C., June 14-21, 2013, and meet U.S. Representatives and Senators.  

Students have the opportunity to watch history come alive as they explore museums, memorials and monuments.  

Lick Creek girls defeat Summersville in state tourney action Saturday

Lick Creek had an extra boost in its 25-23 win over Summersville in first-round action of the junior high school girls’ basketball Class S state tournament at Rend Lake College near Ina Saturday, Jan. 19.

“Woodlawn had played them twice before and their coach told me exactly what to do,” Lick Creek coach Matt Denny said. “We had a good scouting report. He told us they would pound it inside.”

Denny said his assistant coach, Becca Cunningham, filled the role of that big player in practice to prepare for the matchup.
