Two significant events

Two significant, and seemingly unrelated, events unfolded in Union County during the closing days of 2012. Both events actually happened on Saturday, December 22.

Newpaper: hot topic

The inevitable appears to have happened. The Gazette-Democrat became the topic of postings on Topix Anna IL Forum.

Topix is a social media Internet outlet that provides a forum for just about any community of any size throughout the nation. Frequently its postings appear in an "attack" mode, targeting people, businesses or government leaders and agencies. So it came as no surprise to the newspaper staff that an increase in the cost of the paper drew the ire of one reader.

Successful youth duck hunt, banquet held in area

The third annual youth waterfowl hunt banquet in Southern Illinois was dedicted to a special hunter this year, Bryce Reed.

“Bryce’s dad, Rex, and myself grew up hunting in Karnak,” said Gene Morgan of Murphysboro, the coordinator of the youth hunt and memorial banquet for Bryce. “Bryce learned to love the outdoors like I did.”

This year’s event, which was held at the Shawnee High School at Wolf Lake on Thursday, Dec. 27, was renamed the Bryce Reed Memorial Banquet.

Reed passed away after a lengthy battle with cancer on April 16, 2012.
