Charles L. “Bud” Harvell, Sr.

<strong>Charles L. “Bud” Harvell, Sr., 83, of Tamms, died at 4:17pm on Thursday, November 8, 2012 at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.</strong>

<strong>He was born on Jan. 1, 1929 in Tamms to George and Ocee (Crocker) Harvell.  He married Ebby Patterson on April 1, 1960.  She preceded him in death on June 6, 2012.</strong>

<strong>He was an ordained Pentecostal minister, a mechanic and drove for D & K Pharmaceuticals.</strong>

Anna baseball team advances

Bryce Osman was 4-for-5 at the plate to lead Anna to a 13-1 win over Cobden in the semifinals of the Southern Illini junior high baseball conference tournament hosted by Egyptian School at Tamms Sept. 15.

Sheldon McGrath, Jake Wright and Jaryt Tripp were each 3-for-5 at the plate for the Indians. Dalton Goddard was 2-for-4.

Hunter Ralls was 2-for-5, Conner Jerolds was 1-for-3 and Jade Gillis was 1-for-4.

Wright was the winning pitcher, tossing a one-hitter. He also had 15 strikeouts and 5 walks.

Suspect in custody after high-speed chase

A Southern Illinois man was taken into custody after a high speed chase which came to an end in Union County.

The incident left an Anna Police Department squad car with damages. No injuries were reported.

The incident happened early Sunday morning, Oct. 28.

Authorities identified the suspect as Ryan Picket, 29, of West Frankfort.

Picket faced multiple charges in connection with the incident, which began in West City, which is in Franklin County.

Remembering sacrifice of young Marine from area

During the mid-1960s a lot of events were happening on the world stage.

The looming Vietnam Conflict was receiving all the national attention and was getting ready to ignite and involve the United States in a bloody conflict.

But something else was happening on the other side of the world far away in the Caribbean Sea that didn’t grab a lot of headlines.Uncle Sam’s military was involved as well and produced casualties.

County officials take office on Dec. 3

Recently elected Union County officials are scheduled to take their oaths of office Monday morning, Dec. 3.

The oaths will be administered by Union County Judge Mark Boie.

The ceremony is set for 9 a.m. Monday in the courtroom on the second floor of the Union County Courthouse in Jonesboro.

Those who will be taking their oaths of office include Union County Board of Commissioners members Richard Cunningham, Danny Hartline and Max Miller, coroner Phil Hileman, circuit clerk Lorraine Moreland and state's attorney Tyler R. Edmonds.

Anna plans to have home rule on ballot in 2013

Anna residents can expect to be hearing and learning more about home rule in the coming months.

The Anna City Council is moving forward with plans to place the home rule issue before voters in the April 2013 election.

Home rule was on the agenda at a regular meeting of the city council which was held Tuesday evening, Nov. 20. The meeting was at Anna City Hall.

Last week, the council authorized city attorney John Foley to draft a resolution to have home rule on the ballot in next spring's election.

Ethel Mae (Ragsdale) Harris

<strong>Ethel Mae (Ragsdale) Harris, 80, of Vienna and formerly of Makanda, died at 5:55AM on Monday, November 12, 2012 at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.</strong>

<strong>She was born on March 29, 1932 in Makanda the daughter of Calvin and Ada (Darnell) Ragsdale.</strong>

Hunters harvest 1,319 deer in county

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources, IDNR, reports that hunters in Illinois harvested a preliminary total of 72,111 deer during the opening weekend of the 2012 Illinois firearm deer season, which was Nov. 16-18.  

The second portion of the firearm season begins Thursday, today, and continues through Sunday, Dec. 2.

The preliminary harvest total of 72,111 for the first three days of the 2012 firearm season compares with the first weekend harvest of 66,501 deer during the 2011 deer season.  

Arena Golf, Cape Girardeau, offers professionally designed, constructed putt putt course

Arena Golf in Cape Girardeau now is the home of the area’s only professionally designed and constructed putt putt golf course.

The new course opened last weekend at the recreation complext located at 2901 Hawthorn St.

Bryan and Tyra Johnson of Cape Girardeau are the owners of Arena Golf.

The Johnsons purchased the facility in February and continue to make improvements to the longstanding business.

Beginners and avid golfers will enjoy and be challenged by the course, which includes water and many obstacles.

Juanita Gaddis

<strong>Mrs. Juanita Gaddis, age 95 of Dongola, died at 6:45 a.m. Wednesday, November 7, 2012 in the Memorial Hospital in Carbondale. She was born July 5, 1917 in Alto Pass, the daughter, George and Meda McKinney Hickam. She married Edgar “Dick” Gaddis on July 1, 1939 in Anna. He preceded her in death on March 4, 1996.</strong>
