James Diagosto

James Diagosto, 81, of Anna, died at 6:40 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012, at Union County Hospital in Anna.

He was born on March 29, 1931, in Cook County, the son of Charles Diagosto and Grace Purillo.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Graveside services were Friday, Dec. 7, at 10 a.m. at Choate Cemetery with Pastors Ernie and Verlinda Newton officiating.

Crain Funeral Home Anna-Jonesboro was in charge of arrangements.

Andrew Wesley Helmus

<strong>While surrounded by loved ones at his country home, Andrew Wesley Helmus, age 64, passed away late Sunday evening, Dec. 9, 2012, after a long battle with kidney cancer.

</strong>

<strong>Andrew was born Dec. 30, 1947, in Oak Park, Ill., a cherished son of Walter and Marie (DeBoer) Helmus.

</strong>

<strong>He married Lynne K. Spencer on Oct. 5, 1974. They had two much beloved children, Drew Spencer Helmus, of New York, NY, and Amber Marie Helmus, of Duschene, UT.</strong>

Wildcats struggle in recent losses

The Anna-Jonesboro Community High School boys’ basketball team has  struggled in two recent losses.

Massac County 80, A-J 29: The visiting Wildcats were able to score just 8 points in the second half in the loss Saturday, Dec. 15.

The Patriots led 19-10 after one quarter and 38-21 at halftime. Massac County led 67-25 heading into the fourth quarter.

“That second half, they came out and put it on us,” A-J coach Mike Chamness said. “We couldn’t throw it in the ocean.”

Carol Croft Mitchell

Carol Croft Mitchell, 63, of Tamms, died at 3:05 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, 2012, at her residence.

She was born on March 6, 1949, in Cairo, the daughter of George and Mary Croft. They preceded her in death.

She married Warren “Buddy” Mitchell on Jan. 6, 1969.

She served as mayor of Tamms for three terms up to the week before her death. She was also a retired rural mail carrier, serving the Tamms area for 31 years.

She and Mr. Mitchell owned and operated Mitchell’s Barbeque & Catering.

Alberta Hileman

Alberta Hileman, 89, of Anna, died at 5:45 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2012, at the Jonesboro Rehab & Healthcare Center.  

She was born on Jan. 6, 1923, in Tamms, the daughter of Harvey and Blanche Dickerson Sronce.

She married Don W. Hileman on June 18, 1940, in Jackson, Mo.  He preceded her in death on May 4, 1971.

She was a member of Mill Creek Baptist Church.

Anna man indicted on multiple charges

A Union County grand jury has returned multiple indictments against a local man.

Union County State’s Attorney Tyler R. Edmonds announced Friday, Nov. 30, that the grand jury had returned indictments against Benton T. Poirier, 33, of 1870 Old Highway 51 North in rural Anna.

Poirier is charged with five counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child, all Class X felonies, and three counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, all Class 2 felonies.

Louise Marie “Lois” Knight

<strong>Mrs. Louise Marie “Lois” Knight, 69, of Anna, passed away at 2:30 p.m., Thursday, November 8, 2012 at her home in Anna.  Lois was born August 8, 1943 in Tipton, Tennessee the daughter of Wilburn and Mildred Bailey Knight. </strong>

<strong>         Lois is survived by three children, Paula McDaniel of Stillwell, OK, Paul York of Sulphur Springs, AR, and Steve York of Anna; and 11 grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents.</strong>

Disposition of cases from the Union County state’s attorney’s office

The Union County state’s attorney’s office in Jonesboro reports the following dispositions of cases:

Oct. 30. Shannon Swartzell, Jonesboro. Case No. 12-CF-71. Offense: possession of another’s credit card. Disposition: 12 months of probation, fine, fee, court costs, one day in county jail, restitution, public service work, no contact with victim, provide DNA to probation.

Blue Star Marker dedication ceremony scheduled Nov. 9

The Anna-Jo Garden Club and District VII, Garden Clubs of Illinois, GCI, invite the public to the dedication of a Blue Star Memorial Highway Marker which they recently placed at the northbound Trail of Tears Rest Area by I-57 at mile marker 32, 1 mile north of Route 146.  

An outdoor ceremony is planned at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9, near the south side of the welcome center.  

Since seating is limited, those who plan to attend are advised to bring a lawn chair.  

Following the program, refreshments will be served inside the welcome center.
