Lick Creek girls have won 17 straight games

Lick Creek won three games in recent junior high school girls’ basketball action.

Lick Creek 37, Shawnee 18: Elle Basler had 16 points, 7 steals, 7 assists, 4 rebounds and 3 blocks to lead visiting Lick Creek to the win Monday, Dec. 17.

Morgan Dillow added 11 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal. Madison Root 8 points, 3 steals, 2 rebounds and an assist. Brooke Miller 2 points, 5 rebounds, 4 steals and 2 assists. Bailey Hooks 5 rebounds and 2 steals.

A-J girls post victory, loss in recent action

The Anna-Jonesboro Community High School girls’ basketball team posted a win and a loss in recent action.

Marion 48, A-J 39: The Lady Wildcats couldn’t recover from a rough third quarter in the loss to host Marion Thursday, Nov. 29.

The game was tied 11-11 after one quarter and Marion led 23-20 at halftime. A-J was outscored 12-4 in the third quarter though and wasn’t able to recover.

Kim Mixen scored 22 points to lead the Lady Wildcats. Balyie Denny and Krista Pender each added 6 points, Brooke Chamness 3 and Cara Farris and Katie Grant 1 each.

Jeannie Lynnette Hoyle

<strong>Mrs. Jeannie Lynnette Hoyle, age 69 of Anna, died at 8:09 p.m. Monday, December 3, 2012 at her home in Anna. She was born September 28, 1943 in Anna, the daughter of Lynn Karraker Jr. and Ima Jean Renfro Fowler. She married James “Robin” Hoyle on March 23, 2002 in Grand Tower.</strong>

Jonesboro School conducts successful food drive

Students at Jonesboro School helped their friends and neighbors who are in need during the holiday season.

Students conducted the school's second canned food drive prior to Christmas. The food drive was sponsored by junior high science teacher Dayna Will.

The school's 416 students collected hundreds of food items. The items that were collected were donated to the Shawnee Development Council food pantry in Anna.

A-J to compete at Eldorado

The Anna-Jonesboro Community High School boys’ basketball team is scheduled to compete at the Eldorado Holiday Tournament Dec. 27-29.

The Wildcats open tournament play against host and seventh-seed Eldorado at 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 27.

Harrisburg is the top seed in the tournament. Other seeded teams are Gallatin County, Meridian, Union County, Ky., Massac County, Herrin and Fairfield.

Other teams competing are West Frankfort, Carmi, Hamilton County, Carrier Mills, Norris City-Omaha-Enfield, Galatia and Hardin County.

Taw Jangthakiema

Taw Jangthakiema of Thailand died in October 2012 in Thailand.

She was born in 1945 and was 67 years old at the time of her death.  She lived in 132-moo 1 T. trasieng O. maung A. sunrin, Thailand.  

Services were held for her on November 2, 2012, in Thailand.

She is survived by her husband, Yok Saong, and the following children, Mrs. Vichian (Tom) Tingley of Jonesboro; other children who live in Thailand are Sumon, Smaw, Veera and Tiewan.  

Chamber announces officers, presents special honors Tuesday

Tim McGrath will be serving as president of the Union County Chamber of Commerce in 2013.

An announcement about the organization's new president was made at the Union County Chamber of Commerce's annual meeting.

The meeting also was highlighted by the honoring of a business of the year, a new business of the year, a citizen of the year and the presentation of a business improvement award.

The meeting was Tuesday night at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Carroll P. Foster Post No. 3455 near Anna.

Mary Belle Watkins

<strong>         Mrs. Mary Belle Watkins, age 93 of Jonesboro, died at 12:15 a.m. Monday, December 24, 2012 in the Union County Long Term Care Facility in Anna. She was born September 10, 1919 in Dongola, the daughter of Earl and Elsie Hinkle Beggs. She married James O. Watkins on March 26, 1938 in Jackson, Missouri; they were blessed with 70 years of marriage and were honored by their three children with a 70<sup>th</sup> wedding anniversary celebration in March of 2008. James preceded Mary Belle in death on September 17, 2008.</strong>

Health department clinic moving to new location

Southern Seven Health Department is making plans to move its Union County clinic to a new location.

The health department's Union County clinic is moving from its current location on the Jonesboro Square.

The department's new clinic will be located at 260 Lick Creek Rd. in east Anna.

The local clinic is scheduled to be closed beginning the week of Dec. 24. The clinic is slated to reopen at its new location on Monday, Jan. 7.

Raymond Arthur Boyd

<strong>Mr. Raymond Arthur Boyd, age 89 of Jonesboro, died at 2:40 p.m. Thursday, November 29, 2012 at the Memorial Hospital in Carbondale. He was born October 20, 1923 in Jonesboro, the son of Robert L. and Hattie Edwards Boyd. He married Violet L. Wilson on January 5, 1945 in Anna.</strong>
