A community of giving

The 2011 Union County Christmas Project again was a great success, organizers Debbie Jackson and Karen Funkhouser report. The project provided Christmas gifts for 420 children. Jackson and Funkhouser shared the following update about the project:

It was at times overwhelming, but that success was due to the wonderful community that we live in.

Our community of sponsors has been working together for many, many years to make Christmas better for those in need.

Union County Hospital announces completion of aquatic therapy pool

Union County Hospital announces the completion of its aquatic therapy pool. 

An open house for the public is planned Friday, Jan. 27, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.  A ribbon cutting is scheduled for 3 p.m. 

The new pool is located in the therapy services department adjacent to the physician’s annex on the west end of the hospital at 517 N. Main St. in Anna. 

Aquatic therapy services will be offered through the hospital therapy services department, which currently offers physical, occupational and speech therapies.

School reorganization proposal certified

A proposition to form an optional elementary unit school district in Union County has been certified to appear on the March 20 primary election ballot.

Union County Clerk Bobby Toler Jr. said he received certification last Thursday to place the issue on the ballot.

The certification came from regional superintendent of schools Janet Ulrich.

Ulrich serves as regional superintendent for Union, Alexander, Johnson, Massac and Pulaski counties.

Best chance to keep Lick Creek School open

To the editor,

As a long time resident of the Lick Creek School District and a retired teacher, 25 years of which I taught at Lick Creek School, I have a sincere interest in the academic success of the children in our community and in having the greatest chance of keeping Lick Creek School open.

Lick Creek School is the heart, soul, pride and joy of the Lick Creek Community. Lick Creek School offers the warmth and nurturing of a close knit community with unique educational opportunities.

Auditions set for musical at Shawnee

A second round of auditions is planned for an upcoming spring musical presentation at Shawnee Community College near Ullin.

The musical "Once Upon a Mattress" will be staged in March.

Auditions are planned from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20, in the educational center on the college's main campus near Ullin.

The auditions are open to persons ages 16 and older.

Performances of the musical are planned March 22-24 on the college's main campus.

Fire Youth Soccer sets registration

Fire Youth Soccer Association registration for the spring season is planned during January in Anna.

The Fire Youth Soccer Association is a new IYSA affiliated league. The league works to teach children soccer fundamentals, sportsmanship and teamwork.

Registration dates and times include:

Saturday, Jan. 14, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Tuesday, Jan. 17, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Saturday, Jan. 21, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Tuesday, Jan. 24, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

A-J to compete in Mid-Winter Classic at West Frankfort

Anna-Jonesboro will compete at the Mid-Winter Classic in high school boys’ basketball in West Frankfort Jan. 16-21.

A-J’s tournament schedule is as follows:

Monday, Jan. 16, vs. Herrin at 7:30 p.m.

Wednesday, Jan. 18, vs. Eldorado at 6 p.m.

Friday, Jan. 20, vs. Carterville at 6 p.m.

Saturday, Jan. 21, vs. West Frankfort at 12:30 p.m. and vs. Johnston City at 6 p.m.


        Rain, cold continue to hamper courthouse project

        Inclement weather continued to have an impact on construction of Union County's new courthouse.

        An update on the project was shared at last Friday morning's regular meeting of the Union County Board of Commissioners.

        The meeting was at the community center in Jonesboro.

        Courthouse construction project manager Mike Smith presented an update on progress at the site. The new courthouse is being built behind the existing facility, which will be torn down.

        IDNR notes special dates

        The Illinois Department of Natural Resources notes the following upcoming events:

        Jan. 15. Pheasant, quail and partridge season closes, south zone. Last day of archery deer and turkey seasons.

        Jan. 17. Applications can be made online (through Feb. 20) for youth spring turkey special hunt permits.

        Jan. 22. Rabbit season closes, south zone.

        Jan. 25. Red fox, gray fox, badger, coyote, raccoon, opossum, skunk, weasel, mink and muskrat trapping season closes, south zone.
