Recommendation made on vet's home maintenance fees

A recommendation has been made regarding maintenance fees at Illinois' veterans' homes, including one in Anna.

The Illinois Veterans Advisory Council, IVAC, voted on and approved a recommendation regarding  the maintenance fees.

The maintenance fee is what veterans who live at the homes pay each month.

The action came at a regularly scheduled meeting  of the IVAC. The meeting was Dec. 13.

Dr. McKibben joining Haire Veterinary Clinic

Dr. Gary McKibben is scheduled to join The Haire Veterinary Clinic in Jonesboro as an associate beginning on Jan. 3, 2012.

Dr. Charles Haire is owner of The Haire Veterinary Clinic.

McKibben is married to Debbie McKibben. He has resided in Anna since graduating from veterinary school at the University of Illinois in 1972.

He has since worked at Meller-James & Associates Veterinary Service in Anna and most recently for the Animal Medical Center in Marion.

Jonesboro girls 7-0 after three victories

The Jonesboro School junior high school girls’ basketball team won three games in recent action.

Jonesboro 46, Meridian 39: Taylor Smith had 11 points to lead visiting Jonesboro to the win Monday, Nov. 21.

Jaycee Pender added 7 points and 2 steals. Madi Calhoun had 7 points, 4 steals and 4 assists. DaKota Hileman had 9 rebounds. Jamie Hammond added 9 rebounds and 2 blocked shots. Aliah Delgado had 2 steals.

Charlene “Toots” Powles

Lady Wildcats open tournament with win

Jessi Stone scored 24 points and had 9 rebounds to lead Anna-Jonesboro to a 47-37 win over Trico in first-round action at the Benton Invitational high school girls’ basketball tournament Tuesday, Dec. 27.

Katie Grant added 8 points for A-J. Kim Mixen had 7 points, Valerie Pender 4 and Brooke Chamness and Erica Friebel  2 apiece.

Both teams traded baskets to open the game. Mixen’s 3-pointer put the Lady Wildcats ahead for keeps 5-3 in the opening quarter.

Driver hurt in accident on interstate

A Texas man sustained injuries as the result of a traffic accident which happened early Friday morning, Dec. 9, in Union County.

Illinois State Police at Ullin reported that a semi-trailer rollover crash happened at 1:42 a.m. Friday at milepost 32 in the southbound lane of Interstate 57.

State police reported that the driver apparently lost control of the vehicle. The semi rolled over and blocked both southbound lanes of traffic.

The driver of the semi was identified as Jose Trevino, 43, of Mercedes, Texas.

Lady Wildcats top Harrisburg 40-34

Anna-Jonesboro defeated Harrisburg in the final game of the Harrisburg Lady Bulldog Preview Tournament 40-34 in high school girls’ basketball Saturday, Nov. 26.

Jessi Stone led the Lady Wildcats with 19 points. Erica Friebel added 7 points, Kim Mixen 5, Krista Pender 3 and Brooke Chamness, Katie Grant and Valerie Pender 2 each.

A-J led 5-3 after one quarter and 19-18 at the half. The Lady Wildcats trailed 26-24 after three quarters but outscored the Lady Bulldogs 16-8 in the final quarter to pull out the win.

William Pierce Reed

William Pierce Reed, 63, of Anna, died at 6:35 a.m. Monday, Dec. 19, 2011, at Union County Hospital in Anna.

He was born on Aug. 18, 1948, in Waterloo, N.Y., the son of Pierce William and Ruth White Reed.

Mr. Reed is survived by his wife, Susan (Koehn) Reed of Anna; five children, Glenn Stevenson of Anna, Tom (Morgan) Stevenson of Anna, Kathleen Reed of Columbia, Mo., Daniel Reed of Anna and Ricky Reed of Atlanta, Ga.; other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Shawnee 38, Cobden 35

Dylan Boston scored 9 points to lead Shawnee to a 38-35 win over host Cobden in junior high school boys’ basketball Wednesday, Dec. 14.

Daniel Parris added 8 points for Shawnee. T.J. Foeste had 6 points, Lucas Matlock 5, Nick Crane and Hunter Levan 4 apiece and Eli Baltzell 2.

Shawnee, 14-2, is scheduled to play again Jan. 11 at home against Egyptian.
