Municipal filing ends

Filing ended Monday, Dec. 20, for 2011 Union County municipal elections. Elections are scheduled in April.

The filing period began Monday, Dec. 13, and continued through Dec. 20.

In Anna, voters will elect a mayor and four city council members next April.

Jim Cross and Wayne E. Wilda Jr. filed for mayor in Anna.

In the race for city council, incumbents David Isom, Ron Stamp, Ricky Tweedy and Martha Ann Webb filed for reelection.

Mavis Marlene Cook

<p style="text-indent: 0.5in; line-height: 150%;" class="MsoNormal"><strong style="">Mrs. Mavis Marlene Cook, age 72 of Anna, formerly of Leslie, MO., died at 11:55 A.M. Wednesday, November 24, 2010 at her home in Anna. She was born September 12, 1938 in White Oak, MO., the daughter of Arvil and Mamie Hicks Hankins. She married Donald Lee Cook on May 31, 1958 in St. Louis, MO. He preceded her in death.</strong></p>

Two plead guilty to charge of conspiracy to distribute heroin

Two Southern Illinois residents have pleaded guilty to a one-count superseding indictment charging them with conspiracy to distribute heroin.

Stephen R. Wigginton, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Illinois announced on Nov. 22 that the guilty pleas had been entered by Carolyn Rea, also known as Carolyn Rose, and Rob A. Rose.

Carolyn Rea is 37. Rob Rose is 39. Both are residents of Cave-In-Rock.

Rea and Rose entered their guilty pleas in United States District Court in Benton.

Nichole Dover

<p style="text-indent: 0.5in; line-height: 150%;" class="MsoNormal"><strong style=""><span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 150%;">Ms. Nichole Dover, age 26, of Anna, died at 10:25 P.M. Thursday, December 2, 2010 at the Union County Hospital in Anna. She was born October 18, 1984 in New Smyrna Beach, Florida, the daughter of Dana and Amy Cunningham Dover.</span></strong></p>

Harold Kirk Tite

Harold Kirk Tite, 68, a resident of Ullin, died Monday evening, Dec. 6, 2010, at 9:30 p.m. at his home.

Kirk was born Sept. 4, 1942, in Gallatin County. He was the son of Wilford Tite and Tressie (Scarborough) Tite.

Kirk was formerly united in marriage to Marilyn (Schierbaum) Tite.

Helen Troutman Lentz

Helen Troutman Lentz was born Aug 26, 1916 to Eldie and May (Penrod) Troutman

Dongola Il.  She passed away at her home in Bourbonnais Il

Nov 30. 2010. 

Helen married Lloyd Lentz in 1933. To this Union three children were

born son Farris, two daughters Shirley and Brenda.

Helen was very active she worked at Manteno State Hospital for 30 years

retiring in 1982.  Helen's husband passed away in 1992.

Helen is survived by two daughter, Shirley Bradley of Bloomington, Il, Brenda LeBon

Homer Gene Farmer

MSgt. Homer Gene Farmer passed away on Dec. 11, 2010, at Landmark Hospital in Cape Girardeau, Mo.

He was born on July 14, 1932, in Marion, to Homer R. and Irene (Turley) Farmer.

Gene enlisted in the Army after graduating from Hurst High School and fought in the Korean War. After discharge from the Army, he enlisted in the Air Force and retired after serving 25 years.

He married Virginia Sue Koch on March 9, 1966. Together they raised six children.

A-J wrestling team wins Lawrenceville Invitational title

Anna-Jonesboro won three first places, four seconds, two fourths and a fifth in winning the Lawrenceville Invitational high school wrestling tournament Saturday, Dec. 4.

“We’re off to a good start,” A-J head coach Rick Bittle said. “We’re 2-0 in dual meets.”

The Wildcats, who claimed the title for the second time in three years, won with a score of 210 over their closest challenger West Frankfort, which finished second with 181.5.

Larry Gene Rosson

<p style="text-indent: 0.5in;" class="MsoNormal"><strong style=""><span style="font-size: 13pt; font-family:">Larry Gene Rosson, age 69 of Jonesboro, died at 2:48 am, Wednesday, December 1, 2010 surrounded by his family at Union County hospital in Anna.<span style=""> </span> He was born on November 1, 1941 in Anna, the son of Harry and Helen (McMillion) Rosson.<span style=""> </span></span></strong></p>
