Water plant project, electrical service at Anna City Park highlight discussion

The Anna City Council this week voiced support for a new water treatment plant and looked at some major concerns regarding electrical service at the Union County community’s park.

The two issues were on the agenda at Tuesday night’s regular meeting of the city council. The meeting was at Anna City Hall.

Water Plant Project

The city council unanimously passed a resolution voicing support for construction of a new plant operated by the Anna-Jonesboro Water Commission, AJWC.

Cobden outscores Dongola

Alysha Bottje scored 11 points to lead Cobden to a 52-12 win over visiting Dongola in South Egyptian Conference high school girls’ basketball Monday, Jan. 11.

Kayla Quertermous added 10 points for the Appleknockers.

Rebekah Russell had 9 points, Taylor Orsburn 6, Katie Mowell and Katelyn Wiggs 4 apiece and Ana Duda, Jordyn Gray, Mara Hackethal and Mariah Piper 2 apiece.

Emily Terbrak had 8 points to lead the Lady Demons. Chelsea Moore and Haley Fuller had 2 points apiece.

Cobden improved to 13-3 overall and 2-0 in the SEC.

A-J girls finish third at Benton tourney

Chandra Parr scored 15 points to lead Anna-Jonesboro to a 53-51 win over host Benton for third place in the 2009 Rangerette Christmas Classic high school girls’ basketball tournament Tuesday, Dec. 29.

Parr was named to the all-tournament team.

Valerie Pender added 11 points for the Lady Wildcats. Emma Basler chipped in 10 points, Rachel Hadyen 8, Destiny Dillow 6 and Jesse Stone 3.

William Earl Anderson

William Earl Anderson Sr., 78, of Ullin, died at 12:50 p.m. Friday, Jan. 1, 2010, at SouthGate Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Metropolis.

Mr. Anderson was born on Aug. 27, 1931, in Cairo, the son of Claude Reese Anderson and Carolyn Louise Stanfill Anderson.

Mr. Anderson was a member of the First Baptist Church of Ullin. He was a U.S. Army veteran who served in the Korean War. He was a retired social worker.

A-J finishes fourth at Eldorado tourney

Anna-Jonesboro finished in fourth place in the Eldorado high school boys’ holiday basketball tournament.

A-J wrapped up play in the tournament Tuesday, Dec. 29.

The Wildcats’ Jordan Adams was named to the all-tournament team.

Following  are game summaries:

Herrin 55, A-J 51: The Wildcats were outscored 7-3 in overtime in the third-place game played on Dec. 29.

A-J led 12-11 after one quarter and 27-21 at the half. The Wildcats held a 34-33 lead going into the final period.

Healthy Woman program event planned on Feb. 1

The Union County Hospital Healthy Woman program plans to host an event on Monday, Feb. 1.

Beth Walker from the American Heart Association is scheduled to be guest speaker at the program.

The free event is scheduled from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the second-floor conference room at Union County Hospital at 517 N. Main St. in Anna.

Preregistration is encouraged, since seating is limited.

Refreshments will be served and a door prize drawing is planned.

SEC girls’ tournament set in Cobden

The South Egyptian Conference high school girls’ basketball tournament is scheduled at Cobden Jan. 25-30.

Cobden is scheduled to play at 6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 25, against Joppa. Meridian takes on Century at 7:30 p.m.

Tuesday, Jan. 26, Goreville goes against Dongola at 6 p.m. and Shawnee faces Egyptian at 7:30 p.m.

The semifinals are scheduled Wednesday, Jan. 27, and Thursday, Jan. 28.

The championship round is scheduled to begin with the 7th place game at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 30.

Billie Ruth Brimm

Billie Ruth Brimm, 84, of Anna, died at 3:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2009, at Lourdes Hospital in Paducah.

She was born on Nov. 11, 1925, in Murphysboro, the daughter of Ezra and Anna Mifflin Gregory.

She married Frank Brimm on July 31, 1945, in Jonesboro. He preceded her in death on May 17, 1992.
