Charles Kerr

Charles Kerr, 95, of Warren, Mich., and formerly of Dongola, died at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 15, 2010, at Medilodge of St. Clair in St. Clair, Mich.

He was born on Nov. 23, 1914, in Union County, the son of Charles and Maude Barringer Kerr.

He was an avid guitar player and liked fishing and gardening.

Mr. Kerr is survived by his three daughters, Sharon Davis of Algonac, Mich., Judy (Rollie) Smith of Edwardsville and Betty Kerr of Apple Valley, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

A-J defeats Carterville in wrestling

The Anna-Jonesboro High School wrestling team defeated visiting Carterville 59-15 Monday, Jan. 11.

Following are results recorded by A-J wrestlers:

112 pounds: Andrew Adams decisioned Eaton 16-0.

119 pounds: Daniel Heath decisioned Tow 8-2.

125 pounds: Forrest Palis pinned Fisher in 1:49.

135 pounds: Brandon Cerney pinned Kiesling in 1:21.

140 pounds: Chase Hargrave pinned Bartok in 1:06.

145 pounds: Preston Brimm pinned Simmons in 3:13.

152 pounds: Andrew McMahan pinned Helton in 1:36.

Veterans touched by letter

To the editor,

In gratitude: In your Nov. 19 issue, you published a letter sent by Jackie Griffith of Anna. I can't begin to tell you how this letter touched me and my comrades who served in the military.

As I read and shared this letter with other members of the VFW, my heart was filled with pride for our young people.

'State of Village'event set in Cobden

A "state of the village" town hall meeting is planned Monday, Jan. 11, in Cobden.

The meeting is set for 6:30 p.m. at the C-Infinity Event Center at 220 S. Front St. in Cobden.

Cobden area residents and business owners are invited to attend the event.

The meeting will be hosted by the Cobden Community & Business Association.

Between 6:30 and 7 p.m., various informational and picture posters will be displayed highlighting both recent events in the village and plans for 2010.

'Cobden's brightest days are ahead of us' Town hall meeting held

Cobden's first "state of the village" town hall meeting offered participants an opportunity to reflect on the successes of the past year – and look forward to continued achievements in 2010 and beyond.

The meeting, attended by nearly 50 people, took place Monday night, Jan. 11, at the C-Infinity Event Center in Cobden.

The meeting was hosted by the Cobden Community & Business Association, CCBA.

Southeast names dean's list students

Students from the Union County area have been named to the fall semester dean's list at Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau.

Students named to the dean's list earned at least a 3.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale and completed at least 12 degree credit hours during the fall semester.

Local students on the dean's list are named below by their hometowns:

Anna: Kodie Edmonds, Lorna M. Ferguson, Amy M. Hopkins, Kasee D. Wood.

Buncombe: Stephanie A. Kula.

Anna sales tax referendum on primary election ballot

Anna voters will be asked to approve a sales tax increase when they go to the polls in the 2010 primary election.

The Anna City Council in November unanimously approved a resolution to place the issue on the Feb. 2, 2010, primary election ballot.

The resolution was approved by a 5-0 vote at a regular meeting of the city council.

The resolution was drafted by Anna city attorney Wes Wilkins.

Voters will be asked to approve a .25 of a percent sales tax increase.

Shawnee 89, Pope County 64

Tyler Davis scored 22 points to lead Shawnee to an 89-64 win over visiting Pope County in non-conference high school boys’ basketball Monday, Jan.4.

Tyler Brant added 21 points, including  six 3-pointers. Ty McMahan had 17 points, Kyle Griggs 10, Andrew Livesay 8, Greg Smith 5 and Anthony Crane, Kyle Stevens and Tyler Spurlock 2 apiece.

The Redskins were ahead 22-7 at the end of one quarter and 40-29 at the half. Shawnee led 71-46  going into the final period.

Shawnee improved to 2-10 overall.
