Assistance appreciated

To the editor,

We’d like to express our deep appreciation for the assistance we received on the morning of Saturday, Dec. 5.  

Early that morning (the coldest of the season) we were awakened to a knock on our door.  

One of our neighbors (unfortunately, we don’t know his name) stopped to let us know our electric pole was on fire. 

We called the Southern Illinois Electric Cooperative, and within a very short amount of time, Mr. Lamar Huston was at our house to assess the problem. 

A-J scores 60-50 victory over Goreville

Anna-Jonesboro built an early lead on its way to a 60-50 win over Goreville in second-round action at the Harrisburg Invitational  high school boys’ basketball tournament Wednesday, Dec. 2.

The Wildcats were ahead 17-11 after one quarter and 30-22 at the half. A-J led 43-36 going into the final period.

Jordan Adams scored 16 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, to lead A-J. Tylor Duckworth added 14 points and 16 rebounds.

Cache River Wetlands open house Dec. 10

The Cache River Wetlands Joint Venture Partnership and Friends of the Cache River Watershed are planning to host a holiday open house Thursday, Dec. 10.

Hours are from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Cypress Creek National Wildlife Refuge office.

The office is located in Building D on the Rustic Campus at Shawnee Community College near Ullin.

Slim chance for white Christmas in area

The chances of Union County seeing a white Christmas this year are pretty slim.

The National Weather Service forecast office in Paducah says there's a chance of snow flurries and sprinkles on Christmas Day. High temperatures are expected to be in the upper 30s Friday.

Every year in December, weather forecasters are asked the age-old question: 

Will we have a white Christmas this year?

Holiday bazaar set in Cobden

Union County Historical and Genealogy Society plans to have a sale on the final day of its annual Christmas bazaar in downtown Cobden.

The final day of the bazaar is Saturday, Dec. 12.

Members of the historical society will receive a 25 percent discount on all items they purchase.

Nonmembers will receive a 15 percent discount.

Hours for the bazaar are from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The bazaar is at 117 S. Appleknocker, next door to the Union County Museum in Cobden.

DNR reports deer season numbers

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources, IDNR, reports that hunters in the state harvested a preliminary total of 66,126 deer during the opening weekend of the 2009 firearm deer season, which was Nov. 20-22. 

The second portion of the firearm season will be Dec. 3-6.

The preliminary total for the first three days of the 2009 firearm season compares with the first weekend harvest of 71,894 deer during the 2008 deer season. 

Cobden Women's Club hears presentation about future of county courthouse

The Cobden Women’s Club met Friday afternoon, Nov. 20, at the home of Mary Sue Treece. Lou Ann Hartline was cohostess.

The meeting opened with the pledge to the flag.

The program was given by Judy Travelstead, a member of the Union County Courthouse Committee, who spoke about the need for a new courthouse.

The present courthouse was built in 1858, with additions in 1894, 1963, 1967 and 1976. The courthouse is in bad physical condition and is not big enough.

Glenn ‘Pistol’ Stearns

Glenn “Pistol” Stearns, 71, of Pomona, died at 8:48 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 12, 2009, at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Murphysboro.

He was born on Nov. 2, 1938, in Carbondale, the son of Gilbert and Bernice Stearns.

He married Jackie Dusch on May 27, 1961, in Murphysboro.

He worked for 40 years as an electrical contractor many will know as Stearns Electric.
