Cobden wins, Shawnees loses in holiday tournament action

Cobden won and Shawnee lost in opening-round action of the Sesser-Valier high school boys’ basketball tournament Saturday, Dec. 26.

Following are game summaries:

Cobden 56, Zeigler-Royalton 48: Robby Lehr  had 30 points to boost Cobden to the win.

Steve Draper and Alex Sweitzer added 10 points apiece for the Appleknockers. Allan Brumleve chipped in 4 points and Bo Gearhart 2.

The Tornadoes led 14-9 after one quarter. The Appleknockers fought back to pull ahead 28-24 at the half. Cobden led 38-35 going into the final period.

A-J falls to Nashville

Anna-Jonesboro fell behind early and couldn’t catch up in a 61-47 loss to visiting Nashville in Southern Illinois River-to-River Mississippi Division Conference high school boys’ basketball action Tuesday, Dec. 22.

The Hornets were on top 18-11 at the end of one quarter and 34-24 at the half. Nashville led 43-31 going into the final period.

Brady Wright had 12 points and 5 rebounds to lead the Wildcats.

Hunters and the law

To the editor,

Since we are now in the firearm deer season, perhaps it would be interesting to review some of the laws and regulations with which hunters are already (presumably) familiar.

I paraphrase these from the IDNR publication “Illinois Digest of Hunting and Trapping Regulations 2009-2010”: (1) Hunters must obtain permission from the landowner before entering his or her land, regardless of whether or not the land is fenced or posted.

Cobden 70, Christopher 58

Alex Sweitzer scored 28 points to lead Cobden to a 70-58 win over Christopher in the first round of the 35th annual Bearcat Thanksgiving high school boys' basketball tournament Monday, Nov. 23.

Robby Lehr scored 23 points for the Appleknockers. Bo Gearhart and Steve Draper added 8 points apiece, Josh Chapman 2 and Josh  Aspen 1.

Cobden trailed 11-10 after one quarter and fought back to pull ahead 28-22 at the half. The Appleknockers were ahead 49-32 going into the final period.

Barbara Louise Isaacs

Barbara Louise Isaacs, 72, of Dongola, died at 10:34 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2009, at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau.

She was born on Nov. 5, 1937, in Battle Creek, Mich., the daughter of Arthur and Louise Bolen Eggleston.

She married Richard Allan Isaacs on Aug. 2, 1975, in Paducah.

Attorney Randi Morrison recently joins local law firm

Attorney Randi (Rayburn) Morrison, a 2007 graduate of Chicago-Kent College of Law, recently joined The Beard Law Firm.

She is based in the firm’s Anna office at 402 E. Vienna St.

Managing attorney Larry Beard said he has been impressed with Morrison’s “strong legal skills and can-do attitude” since she joined the firm in August.

Her general practice covers all areas of law, but most of her cases focus on personal injury, workman’s compensation and family law.

Shawnee 50, Elverado 33

Tyler Glidwell scored 17 points, including three 3-pointers, to lead Shawnee to a 50-33 win over Elverado in the Trico high school boys’ basketball tournament Wednesday, Dec. 2.

Tyler Davis scored 14 points for the Redskins. Kyle Griggs added 10 points, Ty McMahan 6, Greg Smith, Tyler Brant and Kyle Spurlock 2 apiece and Dylan Smith 1.

The game was tied 10-10 after one quarter. The Redskins made a 12-8 run in the second quarter to build a 22-18 lead at the half.

Rally carries A-J over Cobden 50-41

Trailing 23-22 at the end of three quarters, Anna-Jonesboro went on a 12-2 scoring run to open the final period on its way to a 50-41 win over host Cobden in nonconference high school boys’ basketball Tuesday, Dec.  8.

The run was built around a 3-pointer by Jordan Adams, his second of the game.

The Wildcats outscored Cobden 28-18 in the final frame.

The game began low-scoring as neither team scored until 3:09 had gone by in the opening quarter.

A-J, which went on top at the end of the quarter 9-5, led at halftime, 15-13.

'Christmas in Cobden' celebration planned Saturday

The community is invited to be a part of a new Union County holiday celebration.

The first "Christmas in Cobden" celebration is planned Saturday, Dec. 5, in Cobden.

A variety of seasonal activities are planned throughout the Union County community.

The celebration is being sponsored by the Cobden Community and Business Association and the Village of Cobden.

Christmas bazaars featuring decorations, crafts and homemade items are planned at the St. Joseph Catholic Church parish hall and the Union County Museum's General Store.

Authorities investigate discovery nof remains

An autopsy was conducted last week on the remains of a person which were discovered in Union County Tuesday morning, Dec. 22, Illinois State Police at Ullin reported.

The remains were found in a wooded area near the southbound Interstate 57 exit east of Anna.

Union County Coroner Darryl Rendleman reported the remains were seen by a passerby, who notified authorities.

Rendleman said an autopsy was conducted Wednesday, Dec. 23, in Farmington, Mo.

Foul play is not suspected in the case, the coroner said.
