Appleknockers hand Shawnee first loss

Shawnee’s undefeated season came to an end Monday, Dec. 12, after a 55-41 loss to host Cobden in South Egyptian Conference high school girls’ basketball.

Cobden, which avenged a loss to the Lady Reds on Dec. 5, had big first and third quarters on its way to the win.

The Appleknockers led 12-7 after one quarter and were ahead 22-17 at halftime. Cobden made a 16-4 run in the third quarter to take a 38-21 lead into the final period.

Bekah Russell led the way for the Appleknockers with 19 points. Ashley Millis added 10 points, Haley Tomazzoli 9, Katie Mowell 7, Devyn Inman 6, Laurelin Pitts 2 and Sandra Hartline and Audrey Sirles 1 each.

“They finally started listening and came together,” Cobden coach Keri Jones said. “The chemistry was there and we played pretty well as a team. Everybody who played, scored.”

Taylor Ellis scored 23 points to lead the Lady Reds. Gwen Kuehne netted 11 points, Jordan Johnson 4 and Bethany McMahan 3.

Cobden, which improved to 6-4 overall, is scheduled to play Thursday, today, at Johnston City. Shawnee is 8-1 overall.
